An inspiring series spotlighting C40 Cities’ successful climate campaigns across the globe

C40 Cities came to us to commission a five-episode series showcasing the creative ways cities are rising to the challenges of the ongoing climate crisis. Each episode focuses on a specific climate threat that we face and the key work that C40 does to help cities implement climate-friendly solutions.

The videos needed to be accessible and C40 were keen to use bold, graphic line-work to communicate the heavy issues in each video in a clear visual style. The challenge lay in designing simple characters that strike a friendly but credible tone, while also illustrating a diverse cast solely through line-work and a limited colour palette.

While the films explore serious topics, we wanted to maintain a lightness in tone that was able to convey hope as well as sensitivity. We leaned into the neutrality of the clean, graphic linework, while imbuing the character animation with warmth to depict distressing scenes plainly but respectfully. Through this considered balance in the design, we came up with a collection of films that are accessible and celebratory of climate action taking place around the world.
